Jailbreak

The official guide on how to jailbreak your kindle here is as good starting point. The mobileread forums have the definitive guides (Password is ilovejedd). Also see this FAQ on the mobileread wiki.

(Most of these only cover modern paperwhite kindles)

Sometimes, Kindle firmware updates will break the Jailbreak(use emergency.sh to restore JailBreak), search for your firmware on mobileread forums. See this link.

  1. Backup Documents folder(simply make a copy of that folder) + Don’t copy folder back to Kindle unless you are back to same firmware version with which you backup was created
  2. Now reset your Kindle then start again

Check here your device version here & if on factory FW version

Know your serial

Jailbreak Devices

PW4 2018/2019 (When on factory firmware)

It seems like there might be an issue with the latest firmware patch causing the failure, or there could be something that was not done properly. Let’s try to troubleshoot to identify the specific cause of the issue.

Send Serial Number

kindle-jb-factory-1.3-r16160.tar.xz (extract using RAR 5 OR 7ZIP)

Copy main-htmlviewer.tar.gz to the Kindle root directory. (i.e., /mnt/us)
In the search bar, type ;installHtml and press return.
If the screen flashes and the device reboots, the developer key file is now
stored in /etc/uks

latest JB available at Snapshot mobilereads all Universal Kindles

YOU SEE THIS THEN YOU ARE SUCCESSFULLY

Yes, one very important thing is to install hotfix so your Jailbreak is does not broken on updating software (bridge)

Applications

Once you have a jailbreak, the rest is mostly installing packages via MRPI

Latest builds of Hotfix comes with MRPI too so no need to install MRPI again. (Make sure to stick with latest builds)

I keep a ready directory of packages I can use most of it just being koreader.AsDefault

KO reader is a FOSS document viewer for E Ink devices that supports Kindle, Kobo, PocketBook, Ubuntu Touch and Android devices.(Specially for KOBO reader)

The primary 2 packages are:

Update_KUAL-f54e864-.bin
update_kpvbooklet_0.6.6_install.bin

Run ;log mrpi via search after copying them to re-install them if needed.

koreader(installation)
Download the latest release from GitHub.

Modern Paperwhites = kindlepw2 package

Unzip it to the copy files to root directory

& Voila

DRM Related Stuff

There are much better websites that explain the issues with DRM, so go visit: fckdrm.com, DefectiveByDesign.org, or EFF/drm.

The primary tool for stripping DRM from Kindle books is apprenticeharper’s DeDRM Repo which works as a Calibre Plugin.

Stripping DRM (AMAZON)

Install Kindle for PC (v1.17 or v1.26) launch it, and download the book.
Go to ~/Documents/My Kindle Content

Add books to calibre after installing kfx.input and drm plugin v6.8

Run calibredb add book.azw. If all goes well, the book should show up in your library, and you should be able to convert it.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

If not familiar with plugins and Calibre don’t worry you can use Epubor Ultimate without hassle (same for mac)
